I have six kids, little kids. Needless to say, they eat a lot of everything. So I need to buy a lot of everything. Being that I am a savvy SAHM, I am always looking at the prices of food. I could not help but notice the crazy price increase from a whole watermelon, uncut, to what is equivalent to about a quarter cut watermelon. Granted it is nice to buy the cut melon, less mess ready to eat. I thought to myself if there only was an easy way to dice a melon. So I let my fingers do some walking aka internet searching and here is what I found. This revolutionized my life forever!! Maybe that is a stretch, but it definitely made my snack time life easier with the kids. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to cut a watermelon, it is easier than you think.
This is undoubtedly the easiest way to cut watermelons you will find, I have also included a video at the end. It doesn’t get any easier than that.
1. Rinse and dry the whole watermelon.
Yes, rinse the watermelon. I know we will be cutting off the rhine and disposing of it, but we want to clean any pesticides and dirt from the melon. This way it will not contaminate the fresh delicious inside of the watermelon as we proceed to the prepping process.
2. Cut off the ends
Using a serrated knife, cut off the part with the stem, or where the stem was, and the opposite side of the watermelon. This will help to stabilize the watermelon by providing a flat base.
3. Position the watermelon on the cut end on top of the cutting board.
Start cutting off the rhine, the outer green shell. Cutting at an angle, cut along the entire watermelon top to bottom. Once you have made a complete lap around the watermelon, go back and trim off any additional white spots we only want to see that fantastic ripe watermelon that was hiding on the inside.
4. Cut The Watermelon in 1/2 the Long Way
Cut the watermelon in half, the long way. Now place 1/2 the melon on the cutting board, and cut in roughly 1 inch wide discs. Stack the discs of watermelon, and cut inch wide slices across the top of the watermelon. Turn the cut up watermelon 90 degrees and cut perpendicular 1 inch wide slices, this will make the 1 inch by 1-inch cubes.
Boom! You have just successfully cut 1/2 a watermelon in record time with ease. Now grab the other 1/2 of the watermelon and repeat.
5. The second 1/2 same as the first.
Cut the watermelon in half, the long way. Now place 1/2 the watermelon on the cutting board, and cut in roughly 1 inch wide discs. How To Find The Perfect Watermelon
Now that you can confidently dice and slice a watermelon, it may be time to help you pick that perfect melon. Choose one without visible bumps or holes, as these signal a problem with watering beetles and can damage the watermelon.
Take a few to see which are heavier, and the heavier watermelons will be juicier than the watermelons in terms of fruit and flavor.
These tips will help you choose a watermelon that is perfectly ripe and juicy, and the rind should not yield under the slightest pressure or be lightly scraped. Ripe watermelons should make a hollow sound when you tap on their shell and tap it again and again until it is completely empty.
Extra Watermelon?
So you just purchased and diced the perfect watermelon. What do you do if your hungry crew doesn’t eat it all? Great question. You can put it in the refrigerator in an air-tight container aka Tupperware. As long as you refrigerate the airtight container, you will get 1-2 weeks out of this simple but tasty snack. If you decide that it is too much melon, in too short a time period, throw some in the freezer. Simply portion the remaining melon into zip lock bags and toss it in the freezer. Frozen watermelon works great for shakes. In the freezer, the watermelon can last up to 3 months.
